It discusses how economic policy evolved, how economic policy was formulated, and the role of economists in decision making. It considers the interplay between ideological and practical questions, provides biographical details of key economists and includes a clear annotated$B!!(Bchronology of events. The book is especially valuable because the author, as a senior World Bank official, was a close observer and participant in the situation for many years.
Pieter Bottelier was a senior adjunct professor in teaching courses on China$B!G(Bs economy and finance at SAIS for 19 years. He had a 30-year professional career at the World Bank, including Chief of the Resident mission of the World Bank in China at the beginning of China$B!G(Bs financial reform from 1993 to 1997. He consulted with Chinese officials on economic policy making and finance reforms for many years. He is currently a senior affiliated scholar in China Studies at SAIS.
