After sixty years of division and heightened tensions, hopes of a political resolution between Taiwan and China are rising. Based upon the strategies of conflict management systems, this lecture will identify and interpret the mutual non-negotiable elements of a possible cross-strait agreement. These elements include questions of sovereignty, representation, democratic values, human rights, and common cultural identity.

Dr. Peter Y. H. Chen is a Fulbright visiting scholar at The Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resolution at Cornell University. Prior to his current appointment, Chen served in various positions at National Taipei University (NTPU) in Taiwan including; Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics and Director of the Center for International Negotiations and Interpretations. His research and current book project examines how rhetoric contributes to intercultural strategies for conflict management and resolution.
