1. 我知道你是反对Nova Firearm gun store 开在Franklin Sherman小学旁边的。这是很多那里的家长的concern。有什么解决办法吗? Unfortunately, neither the School Board nor the Board of Supervisors have the power to move the gun store—only the store owner can do that. However, I (along with other board members) can (and are) encouraging our state legislators to pass some sort of gun-free school zone to prevent future gun stores from locating so close to schools. I have already introduced this as an issue for including in the School Board’s state legislative program (which I have helped shepherd over the past several years as the Board’s State Legislative Liaison). In the meantime, I know Supervisor John Foust is speaking with the owner of the gun store to see if he can find a mutually acceptable alternative location for the store that is not near a school building. 2. 涨了税就不会有下一次shortage? 下次再涨税? The state of Virginia chronically underfunds its schools. Virginia currently ranks 13th in the country on prison spending but 41st in education spending. Additionally, of that low percentage of education spending, Fairfax County gets only $0.19 in return for every tax dollar that we send to Richmond. At the same time, Fairfax schools have been growing each year by several thousands of students while having to pay increased health insurance costs, increased payments into the VRS (Virginia Retirement System) and working to increase teacher pay. So yes, until there is a change in the education funding mechanisms at the state level and more diversified revenue streams in Fairfax, the Board of Supervisors will be left with the burden of having to increase local property taxes in order to adequately fund our schools. 3. TJ 录取可不可以由TJ 自己老师和staff 主持?他们更了解什么样学生适合TJ. The current process asks for recommendations from the current teachers of applicants. These teachers have had the experience of teaching the students in the classroom and know their strengths and weaknesses. While TJ teachers certainly know what is necessary to succeed at TJ (and they often help us identify the skills necessary to succeed there), I don’t think they would have the same background knowledge of the applicants without ever having taught them in the classroom. |
