“China and the Global Financial System: A Clash of Civilizations?”Monday, February 22, 2016, 5:00-7:00 pmKenney Auditorium 1740 Massachusetts Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20036 China’s growing involvement in the global economic architecture has been uneven, with relatively smooth integration in some areas, and much more contestation in others. In finance, the story has been one of slow integration and growing tensions. In this talk, Dr. Scott Kennedy explains this mixed pattern of integration and explores the challenges of greater Chinese involvement in a range of financial regimes, including those for equity investment, securities investment, credit ratings, the IMF’s SDR basket, and foreign exchange. China’s integration into the global financial system is likely to continue to resemble a complex and challenging socialization process that features political tensions and economic volatility. Dr. Scott Kennedy is deputy director of the Freeman Chair of China Studies and Director of the Project on Chinese Business and Political Economy at CSIS. He is the author of the Business of Lobbying in China (Harvard University Press, 2005) and editor of three books related to Chinese political economics. He is a SAIS graduate and received his Ph.D. in political science from George Washington University.
