Taiwan Challenged in a Changing World
In recent months, Beijing has ratcheted up pressure on Taiwan because President Tsai Ing-wen has not accepted its ‘One China’ condition. As well, President-elect Trump spoke with Tsai by phone and later spoke skeptically about the US One China policy. Simultaneously, Taipei is striving to improve ties with neighbors throughout Asia and to preserve its diplomatic relations. What are the prospects for Tsai’s New Southbound Policy (NSP)? How can Taiwan’s relations with Japan be strengthened? Can Taiwan’s diplomatic relations in Latin America and the Caribbean, accounting for more than half of the official recognitions Taiwan has worldwide, be preserved in the wake of the recent loss of one such diplomatic partner in West Africa, Sao Tome and Principe?
