3.4 magnitude aftershock shakes Va.
WASHINGTON - Why yes, you did feel the earth move Thursday morning in Virginia. That was a 3.4 magnitude aftershock from last week's quake.
It hit at 5:09 a.m. near Mineral, Va., 31 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, Va.
People could feel it from Lynchburg to Maryland's southern border near Baltimore and Columbia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS received between 700 and 800 calls. USGS Geophysicist Randy Baldwin tells WTOP no one was hurt.
"The intensities that were reported were of non-damaging nature. These are just fairly common occurences ever since the main shock about a week ago," Baldwin said.
Baldwin says the region could get even more aftershocks over the next several weeks.
Since last Tuesday's 5.8 magnitude earthquake there have been more than 20 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging between 4.5 and 1.8. Mineral was the epicenter of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake. |
