Uphold DENIAL by the Hearing Examiner denied. The 5 person Appeal Board will resume hearings on Thursday, March 8 at 6:30 PM in the George Howard Bldg., 3430 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City.  

It is important that you appear and sign in to OPPOSE.  The Appeal Board will make the final decision after listening to the petition and the opposition.

OPPOSE building a mortuary in this TERRIBLE LOCATON because:

1.        TRAFFIC ALREADY OVER CAPACITY. With parking for 200 cars, multiple embalmings & funerals, this mortuary of 17,049 square feet (it could be expanded in the future) & the intense business will add much more traffic & increase chance for accidents. TRAFFIC volume on MD 108 south of MD 32 was 16,783 average daily trips in 2008. This road is designed for 1,500 to 6,000 average daily trips.  
2.        SAFETY FOR WELL WATER. EMBALMING CHEMICALS SHOULD NOT BE DUMPED INTO SEPTIC TANKS. Toxic Formaldehyde & other Chemicals cannot be stopped from leaking from a septic system & into ground water, & toxic embalming fumes into the air.  A crematorium can also be added. The Department of Health and Human Services has determined that formaldehyde may reasonably be determined to be a human carcinogen. The Environmental Protection Agency and the International Agency for Research on Cancer reached similar conclusions.  
3.        SAFETY FOR OUR CHILDREN.  Formaldehyde is vented to the outside from embalming. Formaldehyde is heavier than air and moves to the ground. This is a Rural Residential zone.  A LARGE embalming mortuary/funeral home should not be built at THIS RESIDENTIAL LOCATION near homes and a school.
4.        PROPERTY VALUE CONCERN. According to the Appraisal Institute, which is a global membership association of professional real estate appraisers, funeral homes negatively affect nearby property values in the same way that registered sex offenders and landfills do.
5.        WATER RUNOFF.  The 3+ acre forested property slopes to an environmentally protected stream.  The trees and vegetation will be removed for asphalt driveways and parking for 200 cars and a dumpster at the bottom of the hill.
