Top post-recession mecca for young people: D.C.
The D.C. metro area is tied for first place with Seattle as America's most-desirable city for the young and restless.
The Wall Street Journal asked six experts which 10 cities will emerge as the hottest, hippest destinations for highly mobile, educated twenty-somethings, after the recession.
One economist calls the D.C. region the new New York.
Here are the cities the experts picked:
* D.C. and Seattle
* New York
* Portland, Ore.
* Austin, Texas
* San Jose, Calif.
* Denver
* Durham, N.C.
* Dallas
* Chicago
* Boston
The panelists selected D.C. because government hiring is expected to grow fast. Other professions drawing young people to the nation's capital include lobbying, aerospace, defense contracting and professional services.
Ross DeVol, director of regional economics for the Milken Institute in California, calls D.C. the national leader in high-tech services.
The area's 4,000 nonprofits also appeal to young people who are service-minded. |
